Artist Statement

I'm exploring myself and nature through representational and abstract art, mixing and matching metaphors as I go. My relationship to paint is physical, emotional, and tactile: I throw it and I brush it, depending on what needs to be said.

Sunsets are the inspiration for the splatter. Emotion is the fuel. I begin with no plan for the image: color goes on the canvas first, and the landscape emerges from it later, rarely the other way around. Once the splatter is dry, I sit with the result, then give the canvas context by building a scene from imagery gathered on my travels: places and things I've actually stood in front of. Some scenes are specific. Others are only suggestive.

That sequence is the world each painting makes, more often than not. The shapes presented by the streams of color usually decide what exists on the canvas before I do, and the landscape is more often discovered than planned, the same way a place only becomes fully real to me once I've actually set foot there. Each piece is a record of my emotional response to a sunset, and a window into what surfaced once I let the process speak for itself: an exploration of memory and imagination.
